Just state the source release that it is timed against and that you're not resyncing against other releases. That way the people that like to watch hardsubbed can do it in the initial period and people won't be stealing your content for a given period. Softsubs have my preference because I can adjust/scale them to the video to my liking and I can add them to higher resolution/quality video's than the subbing group encodes their hardsubs in. Not sure if it's much better now (I damn hope it is) but at least up till 2013,.ass subtitle support with even a bit of typesetting was absolutely shocking. There was no single filter that could render.ass properly like xy-vsfilter or vsfiltermod on Windows. There is at least 1015 others that have absolutely no idea where to get the videos, how to get subtitles working, what video player to useI don't really see how this would be a problem when the alternative is releasing a video with hardcoded subs. Most popular video container formats (such as MP4 and MKV) have support for subtitle streams, and nowadays everyone and their mother uses at least VLC which I believe handles SRT and ASS just fine. I am not too familiar with OSX, but any video player for that platform which is based on ffmpeg should come with libass (an ASS subtitle renderer that is compared to VSFilter).Unless you are bound by the limitations of the platform you are releasing on (such as lack of support for ASS on video sites), it should actually take less time and effort to release a softsub since you can skip the encoding process.
Hey I'm just playing devil's advocate I'm firmly in the softsub camp and have only ever released softsubs in the 6+ years I've been translating.VLC does work perfectly fine with.ass (With a small BUT, it doesn't like some of the more esoteric typesetting commands such as certain types of clips, animations, draws and decimals for position) and MPC-HC works fine as well as long as you have it installed with a codec pack like CCCP.BUT! Some people still find these instructions quite hard, or are using really outdated versions, or just have some weird setup that just doesn't play subtitles properly.
Then there is the trouble of actually finding the right video with the right timing (Which tends to be the hardest part for most people) and you get to a point where people go 'Why bother with these soft subs when SoompiTV, dramafever, some other subber, just releases a video I can download and watch straight away.' So, yes I definitely agree with the notion that releasing a softsub is MUCH easier than encoding a video, uploading it somewhere then maintaining it. It also avoids sticky legal problems (If you're not properly licensed).Yet hardsubs still make up the majority of what little fan-made subtitles that are still left and I think it just comes down to convenience for the viewer. More convenient = more people watching it. Not sure WHY it has be either/or but the community has just sort of ended up that way.It didn't use to be the case.
At least during 20042006, softsubs used to be the prevalent release mechanism. Then youtube got more popular along with Megaupload, Rapidshare etc and groups moved to hardsubs. It also coincided with a period where certain groups like KshowNow etc were stealing softsubs without credit and groups just moved to hardsubs to combat it. The habit has just stuck around since then.As for Mac OSX, that would be the reasonable assumption but at least the last time I checked in 2013, VLC support for.ass on MAC OSX was questionable, Perian worked.sort of, just depended on its mood and the angle of the mouse as you clicked a video open (i.e. It was very picky) and I think there was one or two other ones that were either very old or very young.
Hopefully it has improved in the last 2 years. OCR for video isn't exactly perfect and most of the people stealing softsubs definitely don't have the expertise to get it working well.The 'people stealing softsubs' crowd actually used to be a big problem several years ago when fan groups were more prominent. We would have sites like Kshownow and random youtube channels taking soft subs, taking the credits out and pretending it's their subtitles.It's not as big of an issue now but it's a moot point anyway since fan groups have mostly vanished in favor of official support from SoompiTV, Dramafever etc.
